Mr. Nand Bahadur Chhetri from Nagarkatta, who works as a corresponded for CCN Siliguri and, was assaulted by Chengmari Tea Garden Manager Debendra Singh Pramar along with his assistant while Mr. Nanda was trying to do his duty.
Mr. Nanda visited Chengmari at around 1 PM on Wednesday after getting reports about protests by workers regarding several issues like lack of enough quarters and deplorable condition of the existing old quarters. When Mr. Nanda started to investigate the issue, the manager of the tea garden along with his assistant manhandled him and snatched away him camera, Press ID and logo.
Wasting no more time, Mr. Nanda visited the Nagarkatta Police Station to file a report, where he was suggested by the police officers to compromise citing the “big hands” behind the Manager’s back. Mr. Nanda denied to step back and finally an FIR was filed.
We strongly condemn the act of assault on Mr. Nanda, which also goes on to attack the freedom of press. We extend our full support towards him and also request the Police to carry out their duty without keeping anyone above the law and without considering the big hand’s behind the Manager.
