A marriage function was going on in the hall when the storm hit the area, police said.
Bharatpur, May 11: A total of 25 lost their lives in Bharatpur on Wednesday night when a wall of a marriage hall collapsed during heavy storm. Out of those killed, four are children. According to police, 28 persons have been reported to be injured. The incident took place in Annapurna Marriage Home located on Sewar road in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan
People took shelter under a shed attached with a wall, which collapsed suddenly, Inspector General of Police Alok Vashishtha told PTI.He said the entire structure of the wall and the shed collapsed and they got trapped.
Superintendent of Police Anil Tank said the deceased included 11 men, seven women and four children.The wall was nearly 90-feet long and 12-13 feet in height.
Several food stalls were set up adjoining the wall. A tin shed was also attached to a portion of the wall.
“The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals immediately and treatment was administered. One injured has been referred for SMS Hospital in Jaipur,’ he said.
The bodies have been shifted to a mortuary and postmortem will be conducted on Thursday, police sources said.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to micro blogging website Twitter and expressed pain on the incident. “The incident in Bharatpur has pained me beyond words. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. I hope the injured recover soon,” he tweeted on Thursday. He has also announced a compensation of storm each to the kin of those deceased.
Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje condoled the deaths and gave necessary instructions to officers concerned for proper treatment of the injured.
